Aloha Cuisine by Chef Sam Choy
"This book contains many recipes, with a new approach to Hawiaiin cooking. Many dishes that I didn't expect. We particularly liked the Hale'iwa Barbecued Pork ribs. Also, some interesting and exotic desserts and drinks. It is well illustrated; also the categories are reasonable." $14.80

Hawaii Tropical Rum Drinks & Cuisine by Don the Beachcomber
"It is the best book about Don the Beachcomer and his wonderful style. Great to have recipes of both the food and the drinks. What a treat! Sadly, they missed "Don's Speial Daiquiri" but, luckly, I have it. What great places they were. I visited all of them. You were transported to a different era and a different world. The book also transports one back in time - We were happier then. We who remember, remember well and thank you." $13.95

The Hali'Imaile General Store Cookbook: Homecooking from Maui
Tourists returning from the Hawaiian Island of Maui bring back tales of a wonderful restaurant that's called a "general store." Owner Beverly Gannon has recorded her cuisine in The Hali'imaile General Store Cookbook. Gannon's cuisine makes use of the islands' tropical bounty and prepares them with a very contemporary sensibility. Thus uku (gray snapper) receives an ancho chile marinade and a bed of corn salsa with ginger cream. Gannon helpfully offers substitutions for ingredients not likely to appear in mainland supermarkets. Her chocolate macadamia nut pie should prove a winning dessert for the chocoholic. $23.10

Roy's Feasts from Hawaii

Hawaii's Best Local Desserts
"I wanted to bring some of the Hawaiian flavor home to New Mexico, so I started cooking one recipe per week from this book. So far, everything has been a resounding success for my family of men. Don't be put off by some oddball ingredients, just try it! Vinegar and coffee in a chocolate cake? Rice Krispies in another cake? You will be pleased with the results. These recipes are easy and fun. One word of caution: ingredients such as fresh mango and papaya, coconut milk, and mochiko can be hard to obtain in some states. But plenty of the recipes use easily available items. I'll never order a grocery store cake again!" $13.95

Hawaii's Spam Cookbook
"All of the dishes are easy to prepare as well as tasty. Kids especially love the main courses and appetizers. Spam is practically a staple diet of the locals in Hawaii, and you will find "spam musubi", soyu spam, etc. at many picnics and beach outings. Unbelievably, there are also very elegant dinners in this book, that you would not even think could be made with Spam!" $9.95

The New Cuisine of Hawaii
My most treasured cookbook!

I am an adventurous cook, and I'm skilled at putting complex meals together, and on time. I have a collection of more than 100 cookbooks, and this is the one that gets pulled out for EVERY dinner party, every special event: it is without question, an incredible resource! My copy is falling apart from overuse. Most recipes have long lists of spices, but the actual preparation is simple. Excellent substitutions (ex: orange roughy for pink snapper, not normally found on the mainland) are recommended, and the suggested wine pairings are very helpful. I have tried 74 of the 118 recipes; there are only 2 that I would not ever try again. $13.93
